Kingfisher Cabin

The ideal retreat where you can relax and unwind in the peace and quiet of the countryside. Kingfisher Cabin is tucked away in a secluded spot within Newbourne Woodland Campsite, private but not isolated – on the edge of a lovely Suffolk village, with an excellent old pub just ten minutes walk away.

One of our sons bought an original showman’s trailer back in the early 90s. He sited it next to the nursery reservoir and lived in it, on and off, for years. He modernised it, converted bits and added a little wooden cabin at the front. The willows, oaks and plants grew up around the trailer, and it has evolved into Kingfisher Cabin – a cosy quirky holiday home for two. The decking overhangs a spring fed pond with reeds and bullrushes, and is home to a family of moorhens and a host of visiting wildlife.

Kingfisher Cabin has a fully fitted and equipped kitchen and sitting room with wood burner – logs and charcoal made on site are available at reasonable prices. There is a CD player, a DVD player with a varied selection of DVDs, and a radio – but no television or wifi – leave the world behind for a little while … The cosy bedroom has a small but comfortable double bed, and has cupboard and hanging space. There is an electric shower and modern flush toilet; everything you could need as you while away a few days in this delightful retreat. The Covid situation now means we ask guests to bring their own bedding – pillows, duvet and towels, there is a mattress cover and bottom sheet on the bed for you.

There is a barbecue and fire pit outside for evenings under the stars. One non-swimming, well behaved dog is welcome as long as you bring a dog bed and a lead or tie-out. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, and there are many excellent footpaths and interesting places to visit nearby. We also have local maps for you to borrow during your stay and a small campsite shop.

Kingfisher Cabin view

“A few days after we moved to the nursery we saw our first kingfisher, apparently lifeless on the ground – it had seemingly flown into a nearby glasshouse. Larry picked it up and cradled it in his hands for a few minutes – we were spellbound by that beautiful bird. Larry could feel its heart beating so he dipped it in the water of the reservoir and it revived and flew away. Every year since then we have seen a kingfisher at the pond, and I choose to think they are descendants of that first lovely bird all those years ago.
